2017-2018 Speech/Debate Team Packet
Dear Parents or Guardians,
As a member of the Aurora Speech/Debate/Drama Team, your child will be participating in Speech tournaments scheduled throughout the school year. I hope the following information about the team is helpful to you:
· Our team is made up of 50+ students at the Aurora High School.
· Tournaments are held on Friday and Saturday. Students are expected to attend both days if they advance in competition. Students may not withdraw from any tournament until they have completed all of their rounds.
· If you with to pick up your child from a tournament, we must have a note from a parent for our records. Mrs. Blackburn must witness you picking up your child and you must sign them out. Students are never allowed to ride with other student drivers.
· Time schedules vary. The bus usually departs from the high school at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and returns from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. On Saturday the bus usually departs at 6:30 a.m. and returns from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Schedules will be presented to students one week prior to the competition.
· When heading back to school, students will call home so you will know the approximate time we will be arriving back at the school. Students cannot be dropped off at any other location, only the school parking lot.
· Students’ cellular phones will be collected from them prior to exiting the bus for competition. If you need to contact your child during this time please call me on my cell phone. I will have it on be during the tournaments. Please be aware at times I am required to judge during a tournament so there may be a delay in returning your call.
· Our school does host a tournament and the team is responsible for various duties during that tournament. The tournament is included in their grade and they will be held accountable for their responsibilities/assignments.
I have enclosed a tentative schedule (please see calendar tab on this website). Some dates may change and you will be notified accordingly.
I have enclosed a consent form for the school year and a list of rules and regulations for the team. If you would like to print off the consent form please download the form via the link provided at the end of this website. Students will be held responsible for their actions. Rules and Regulations of the Speech and Debate Team
1. Students cannot participate in a tournament if they are on the failing list.
2. No student may drop out of a contest during the week of that tournament. If a student cannot participate in an event entered, that student must find an adequate substitute or pay DOUBLE the entry fee. Entry fees are $7 so student must pay $14 per event.
3. No student may drop out of competition on the day of the contest. If there is an emergency please call Mrs. Blackburn as soon as possible at 417-631-6120.
4. If a student does not attend a contest they are entered in and do not have a valid excuse, that student may not participate in any more contests.
5. Students are expected to compete in all tournaments per semester. If students cannot meet the requirement, projects equivalent to the points may be substituted per tournament.
6. In order to compete the student must ride the bus to and from the competition. (Unless prior arrangements have been approved by the office.)
7. All students are expected to represent our school, community and themselves in an acceptable manner.
8. All students are to conduct their debates and events in a courteous and ethical manner.
9. While on the bus, no mixed seating is allowed. Males are to sit on the driver side of the bus and females are to sit on the passenger side of the bus. If there is not adequate room on either side then arrangements will be made by Mrs. Blackburn.
10. Cell phones will be collected and in the possession of Mrs. Blackburn during a sponsored event.
Those selected to go to Districts or qualify for state and nationals will be the ones who have done the best throughout the year. You should be aware we compete against all sizes of schools. It is an honor for those students to advance at a tournament, especially since as many as 100 students may be competing in that event. Only three trophies are presented in each event.
STUDENTS IN VIOLATION OF THESE RULES WILL BE SUSPENDED AND/OR HELD TO THE STANDARDS OF THE AHS STUDENT HANDBOOK.

Expected Behavior for Sponsored Events
1. You must show respect for all people in charge at an event.
2. Professional dress is expected. Students will not compete in jeans. Business attire is expected.
3. Visible body piercing, excluding modest and limited earrings, should be removed prior to competition.
4. You must keep the bus clean. No paper, food or drink is to be left on the bus.
5. No radios will be allowed unless a headset is used and they must remain on the bus and will not be brought into the tournament area.
6. No profanity will be tolerated in the classroom, on the bus, or at an event.
7. No member of the team is to ever leave the school grounds at an event unless prior written permission has been obtained.
8. Absolutely no public displays of affection will be allowed during sponsored events.
9. All students must remain for the awards ceremony if competing in quarters, semi-finals or finals in any event.
10. Professional behavior is expected to all sponsored events.
11. Cell phones will be collected and in the possession of Mrs. Blackburn during a sponsored event.
Mrs. Blackburn reserved the right to make amendments to the listed rules, regulations, and expected behaviors. If such changes are made a notification will be sent home to the parents/guardians.
